Jeff Bailey reviews Cloud Atlas by Lindsey McLaughlin
I am a reader that is always looking for something different; presentation, back story, etc. Well, with Open Atlas, I found it. Lindsey wrote a subtly brilliant book in my opinion. The main character is part of a large program that sends people back in time to gather bits and pieces of information about the past that will be brought to the present and added to a comprehensive database that will be used for research. The theme is presented with a series of flash scenes that don’t seem to make any sense, at first. I kept reading because I was curious where it would all go. Then I realized that a small part of each scene was presenting the objective of the database and the research. Conflicting groups want different results. Should we change the past without knowing how the present will be changed. Should we learn from the past and attempt to not repeat the same mistakes. Interesting. I’ll just let you decide the ‘past’ and the ‘future, for yourself. Lindsey Mclaughlin and Open Atlas: five stars.
